                Marten, founder of Picopter

Moving within London is never a great experience. Last time we moved into our previous apartment, as I was carrying the 3d-printer with my girlfriends record collection on top, I found myself somewhat happy we didn’t have a record player amongst our possessions.

Fast forward 6 months, right before Christmas. She was looking around for a record player to play her collection on. Needless to say that she’s very particular about looks, and she was struggling to find one that really suited her.

That’s where I come in. I was thinking: “how hard can that be?”, and then said it out loud. Turns out, they’re incredibly precise machine. Here’s mine and Melissa’s how-to guide!

Love the project, but there are a couple of thoughts. Whats the needle pressure? Is it adjustable? What really is the Pi for? Speed control, what more?

                Hi Aksel,
Thank you for your comment and your thoughtful questions. The needle pressure hovers between 1.5 - 2g. It is easily adjustable by a screw at the back of the tonearm.

It's however worth noting that you need a scale to get it precise. My advice is to put as little weight as possible on it - and then scale up until you get the perfect balance between sound and weight.

Lastly - the Pi is bit-banging the stepper motor at a frequency just over human hearing range. I've set mine up as a WiFi repeater, just because I can.

                Best,
                Marten
